A Mother's Day almost like Christmas!

Happy Mother's Day!!! There's so much to say and I know I get a little long-winded most of the time (blame my Dad for that one), so I'm just going to start right in. :)

First off, one of the perks of my job at the flower warehouse where I work is that when we have flowers that aren't up to par to sale to customers, our boss let's us pick out the ones we want and we get to bring them home! I always try to bring home extra and then share them with friends, which has been really fun.
A week or so ago, I ended up with tons of flowers and it was awesome to see them all together and looking so pretty.

The next fun thing we did happened yesterday. Dad was on the stake Father and Son's camp out so us girls decided it would be fun to host a Mother's Day brunch for Mom and her 3 sisters and Grandma.
I'm kind of obsessed with cooking so for me it was a big play day to make a bunch of food for my family! Kelani and Malia were good sports and were totally on board to help out with all of it, so on Saturday morning we all headed to the kitchen and started setting up.

I'd started making a few things on Friday night just to save time for Saturday morning, which was lucky, because we wanted to make so many things I'm not sure we could have had it all ready otherwise.
These two are quite the goofs!! :)
Malia made hashbrowns and bacon and then Nani helped her fill the quiche shells that morning.
 Our menu consisted of:
Mini-quiche; cinnamon rolls (one pan of regular, and one pan of raspberry filled - thank you, Pinterest!); hashbrowns; bacon; fruit salad; and apple pie bars for dessert.
Malia told me that we didn't need dessert for a breakfast like that, but I reassured her that because it's technically "brunch" that totally means dessert is welcome.

Look at the cute little quiche! :)
I've made cinnamon rolls before, so I wasn't too worried about those (I mean, I don't make them as pretty as Mom or Dad does, but they turn out edible and that's what I'm going for...) but when I saw the raspberry ones on Pinterest, I thought, "We've got to try it, they look too good to pass up."
So I crossed my fingers and went for it. Overall I think they turned out pretty good. I also had to laugh because all in all, about half the menu ended up being food that is covered in frosting. Sugar buzz, anyone?
Minus the fruit salad, there's the selection. It was a whirlwind morning as Malia, Nani, and I sang along to some Taylor Swift and made sure not to burn the quiche. :)
Maybe we got it from Dad, but anytime we have any major kitchen projects, it isn't complete without our favorite music going on in the background. PARTAY!!
Grandma and the aunts all made it and before we knew it it was time to eat!
 I hope you're hungry, guys.
It was fun to sit and listen as everyone ate and visited. Nothing brings our clan together like food. :) I'm glad all of Mom's family lives so close around Boise and Meridian and that they could all come over for a while.
Us three girls pulled up the bench and just sat back and listened and ate. Mmm mmm mmm!
There's our family (well, part of it, obviously). These are a few of the awesome moms I've been blessed to have in my life - most especially my own mom!
And for today! It was pretty much like Christmas because....we got to Skype with David!
We got right home from church because he said he'd be on at 3:00 our time, which is 6:00 in his part of Brasil.
Mom and Dad had set up our Skype account a while ago, but when it was about time to log in today, Dad couldn't find or remember the password! What?! Dad and Mom were starting to get a little distressed as he looked for the paper where he'd written everything down, but in the end we got it all worked out. :)

Here we all are, gathered around the computer and just hoping that we'd done everything right as we waited for David's "call".

Success!! All of a sudden, there he was! It was sooooo good to actually see him and hear him.
I mean, we're already so spoiled that we get to email him once a week, as opposed to waiting weeks for a letter.
But to actually carry on a conversation with him while he's thousands of miles away and three hours ahead of us.
It's an amazing thought.

Not much with him and his personality was very different. I mean, Mom was like, "I'm a little nervous. What if he's way grown up and different already and we don't know what to say to each other?"
But he carried on much as usual, once we got past the first few awkward minutes of not knowing where to start.
The main difference was that every so often he'd start to tell us something, or comment on what we'd say, but then have to correct himself because he was speaking in Portuguese! :D
And in a way, it was nice to see that he still has his smart-alec sense of humor.
For example - first he showed us a picture of some guy in their ward who apparently saw a picture of me and told David that he (this guy) wants to marry me - and David told him to do whatever he wants. Yeah, I really don't love the idea of David being my matchmaker..... But all the boys there that are Kelani's age want to marry her, so maybe we'll just stick with that. ;)
But the other part that had us all laughing was David saying that his companion's girlfriend will be coming to BSU this fall and the comp. is all worried that his girlfriend will meet a guy there and marry him while the missionary's still in Brasil.
So David reassured his comp. by telling him this, "Hey, my oldest sister is a guy repellent so I'll just tell her to hang out around your girlfriend and the guys won't come near them!" Isn't he sweet? David will be sorry someday when I marry someone who can totally beat him up! ;)
Anyway, he's doing really well and sounds like he's getting the swing of things as a missionary. It's really nice to hear him speak Portuguese since it was a little rough on him for the first few months. But it'll be 6 months for him at the end of this month, which means he's already almost 1/4th of the way through.
Sometimes it feels like, "What? Only six months?!" And other times it feels like we've always just lived from Monday to Monday to talk to him through email. It's hard to describe.
But after about an hour it was time for him to go so that his comp could have a turn talking to his own family. It was just so much fun to talk to him face to face, so to speak, and now we can't wait for Christmas when we'll hopefully get to do it again!

And I can't end this post without saying a thing or two about my mom - it is Mother's Day, after all!
We have the awesomest Mom ever and life for us has been so good with her as our mom.
She's the kind of person whose dream was always to be a mom and be home with her kids. Once we started coming along she gave up a lot to take care of us, but she always tells us that it's the only thing she's ever wanted to do.
Not only was she able to be a "stay-at-home" mom, she also decided we would be her "stay-at-home" kids and we got to be together all day all the time as we were taught at home. I realize there are some situations where that just isn't an option for some families, and that's ok, too!
But by being able to have the life we did, we were taught not only history, math, and reading, but also how to scrub toilets, dust, vacuum, and to develop "real life" everyday skills. True, there were many days that teaching us was a major pain because we were little stinkers, but Mom stuck with it and I'm so glad she did!!
She let us grow up building forts in the living room; making Kool-Aid popscicles whenever we felt like it; riding our bikes through every mud puddle in the neighborhood; and staying up long after most kids would normally be in bed, just because she liked having us around. ;)
Thanks to Mom we've always had music in our home whether it was listening to her when she'd play the piano, or as we grew up watching all the classic musicals like, "The Sound of Music", "The King and I", "My Fair Lady", and all the other ones like that.
Mom is totally tender-hearted and loves just about every animal and baby that she meets.
I know we take her for granted way too often, but I hope she really does know how much we all love her!!

And then there are all the other moms in my life - aunts, grandmas, friends.....I have been so blessed to have wonderful examples of righteous mothers and women all along. I don't know what I'd do or who I'd be without knowing each one of these amazing people.
I saw this quote the other day and it seemed to fit just right -

So true!

So for all you moms (and moms at heart), have a happy Mother's Day, and know that you are loved not just today but everyday!
Thank you for who you are!
