More chicks

We did something fun, that we've never done before! We decided to let our hens hatch some eggs! We were told to see which nest filled up first, then not to collect the eggs out of it. Eventually the hens would notice it filling up, and start sitting on the eggs. Apparently they usually end up with about 8 - 10.
One of our hens, Pippy, started sitting and from what we could tell, there ended up being about 18 eggs! After a few weeks, it was time for them to hatch, and it happened on Mother's day weekend. Not all of the eggs hatched, and all together we ended up with 9 cute, little chicks. It was hard to know how many there were at first, because the chicks actually hide under Pippy and tuck themselves into the underside of her wings.
But every so often they'd poke their little heads out, and some even got brave and came out onto the ramp in front of the nest.
They were so cute! Pippy would kind of chirp at them as they started exploring, and before long, they'd run back to the nest and hide again.

So that was about a month ago. But even after a week or so, they were out of the nest and checking out the coop. We started digging up worms for them and it's so funny to see those tiny, little chicks grab a big ol' worm and then take off running as fast as they can. Their legs are just blurs as they try to get away from each other, since they all try to take the worm from who ever has it.

These last two pictures were taken yesterday, and I managed to get all nine of the babies, and their mom in the picture (the black hen by the shovel is Nugget- she's hoping for a worm, too). They were pretty busy hunting for worms. They're starting to get to the stage where the soft, baby feathers are giving way to the "grown up" ones. But they're still pretty cute at this point.

Enough of them are pretty close to the same color, that it's hard to tell them all apart. But we got one black one, and named (her?) Nacho from the first day we saw her. We have one who had a little sore over one of her eyes, so she's had a couple nick names, one of them being "Left eye".

Dad chillin' with Nacho.
They're so fun!
